World War I: What weapons did they really use?

Many hours or many days of artillery preparation. For example, in the Battle of the Somme, the artillery preparation lasted 7 days.

Shelling a city to this degree makes sense. I understand that it was a trench war and all that. The sheer level of annihilation triggers stuff like this in my head:

• Now go and strike Amalek and completely destroy everything that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

Since were on the topic, this always amazes me - The Monument to the Battle of Nations: The Biggest Monument in Europe It is dang near impossible to find on google. Like it is being deliberately obfuscated.

The flags (Banners, etc.) seem to be a great starting point to any in depth conversation on the topics of history.
