1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Okay, I think I agree now, after taking some time away. I guess it's a perspective thing that makes it seem like the Occcidental is too close to the Yesler-Leary building. Does this whole area: Fit in here? To which I reply, very confidently, I guess? It's still very confusing, because...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

You're not wrong, the world is. In the 6/5/89 picture, the building on the left is where the Olympic Block building is claimed to be built after the fire (despite showing up in the '84 and '89 birdseye view drawings, looking very similar). It's location is obscured in the 1884 photo (because...

The Staff of Saint Bernardine of Siena

I think it's a part of the transparent veil type thing (I think) she's wearing. Which explains nothing. Her and Bernie there give me the willies though! Both look like 'something' impersonating a human being.

1888-92 Obelisk: Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis, Indiana

Well, the basement museum didn't open until 1918... probably pretty dumb to add it after the fact, but perhaps they were looking for a way in to a pre-existing structure, like an Egyptian tomb. Those before photos look like they were from an entirely different epoch.

1896: Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway

Yeah. Like what is it with these oddball, obscure tram projects getting destroyed almost immediately after being opened and then having to be reconstructed? Volk's Electric Sea Railway, Daddy Long Legs, The Brighton to Rottingdean Seashore Electric railway, Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

I dunno, it's probably just imprecise language. I mean, the Pioneer Building, from what I can tell, is only about 1000 feet from the current waterfront anyway. Obviously not what you want if someone is selling you a house "on the beach" but close enough for government work. But who knows...

The Staff of Saint Bernardine of Siena

So I debated a lot about putting this picture in this thread, as it's kind of off-topic, but I really wanted to show it off. The pictures of Bernadine reminded me of this painting that I stumbled upon last night. It gives me a very similar, unnatural, androidesque vibe (and its also from the...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Pretty good anticipation if so, considering: History & Culture - Klondike Gold Rush - Seattle Unit National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service) You'll never guess what buildings illustrate that article! Haha, that's a funny turn of phrase, because if you've ever been in a building...

1888-92 Obelisk: Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis, Indiana

Wow, I didn't even know this one existed. But I've only ever sped through Indiana... the view from the highways is so boring, I figure I need to get through it before I fall asleep. I would think that the TV probably has shown this to me during Colts home games, but obviously didn't convey the...

19th Century: Public & Private Steam Transportation

Kind of a weird name for a car, right? Maybe it's referring to an earlier definition but wiki says: I mean, as much as I think it would appropriate, I doubt anyone would want to ride in a Ford Enema... The video of Paris linked in the post is from the Lumiere brothers. So, it's post 1895...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Yeah, I'm definitely starting to go cross-eyed trying to place all these buildings. So, I believe it would have also been diagonal from the former Yesler-Leary building, the Olympic Block: On Seattle’s old Olympic Block, a classic building is home to everything cheap Torn down in the 1970s...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Not far enough. Seattle Weather History PDF Some weather data was collected starting in the 1870s, but it seems to be pretty patchy until the 1890s. The document also seems to indicate there wouldn't be any precise rainfall information until that time. Check this out though: That's...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Here's another 1889 survivor building (from the same architect William E. Boone, descendant of Daniel, as Yesler's mansion and the Yesler-Leary building). This one seems to be even luckier when we see where it's located. Then Now Seattle at Second and Columbia, ca. 1900 Google says its...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Keep finding other wrinkles here. Yesler did not claim the land, he apparently traded (or something) for it: Maynard, Dr. David Swinson (1808-1873) Agree 100%. Like to carefully avoid Mr. Yesler's mansion...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

The article also doesn't reconcile the disparity between Yesler being so in debt that he tried to liquidate all his assets in the 1870s, eventually suffering a massive loss of property in 1889, but by the time he dies in 1892, he has a million dollars for people to contest.

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Doubtful. From the same article I posted above: Heh. Everything burns. Edit: Check out all the lines around this mansion (on the left): Post-fire (complete with creepy kid): PCAD - Yesler, Henry L. and Sarah Burgert, House #2, Pioneer Square, Seattle, WA Story includes an Andrew...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Some fairly interesting information on Yesler, which seems to sort of contradict some of the information jd posted: Yesler, Henry L. (1810?-1892) The article also has a story about how Yesler, unable to sell his properties to offset his debt, attempted to hold a lottery to partially finance the...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

It does possibly explain the "why" though. In the way that 9/11 (whatever exactly happened) lead to the War on Terror and further domestic surveillance and restrictions of personal freedom, perhaps the goal here was to, in a mob-shakedown like fashion, have Washington join the United States. The...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

Yes, that article is definitely very suspect. Weird little lie right off the bat too, "No other American city ever suffered a loss so proportionally great." Then they even reference Chicago afterwards! Sticking with the premise I asserted though and comparing to modern media coverage, it...

1892 Pioneer Building in Seattle: how and when was it built?

I think this is a possibility... or slightly different, perhaps the world was not on the same timeline for quite awhile. I mean, this seems fairly obvious... it's not 2021 everywhere on Earth even currently, so imagine how difficult synchronization would be in a time period where mass world...
